Vesi Yoga

Sanskrit: “that which is placed after

How it forms

A planet other than the Moon — and excluding Rahu and Ketu — occupying the 2nd house from the Sun.

The exact condition, and who can form it

Check the sign following the Sun for occupants, excluding the Moon and usually the nodes. The Moon is excluded here for the same reason the Sun is excluded from the lunar flanking yogas — its position relative to the Sun reflects phase rather than independent placement.

What the tradition says

Truthfulness, steadiness and a settled disposition; classical sources describe balanced conduct more than achievement.

What makes it strong — or merely technical

Determined by the occupant. Benefic occupants yield the classical description; malefic occupants shift it toward rigidity. A dignified occupant strengthens the reading substantially.

What cancels or dilutes it

Combustion is a particular problem for this yoga by construction, since anything in the 2nd from the Sun is within one sign of it and frequently within combustion range. This is a structural weakness of all three solar flanking yogas and is rarely acknowledged.

When it is held to operate

The dasha of the occupying planet. The Sun’s own mahadasha of six years is the shortest in the Vimshottari cycle, so where the Sun is the reference point rather than a participant, the yoga is read through the occupant’s period alone. Vesi has no independent activation window of its own.

Where the classical sources disagree

Sources differ on the nodes and on whether a single planet suffices. The combustion problem is handled inconsistently — some authorities apply it strictly, which would void most instances, while others set it aside for these yogas specifically.

An honest reading

The solar counterpart to Sunapha, and like it, almost entirely dependent on which planet occupies the position rather than on the bare fact of occupation.

A note on how to hold any of this: a yoga is one feature of a chart among many, and no combination decides a life on its own. Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
