Budha-Aditya Yoga

Sanskrit: “Mercury and Sun

How it forms

Mercury conjunct the Sun in the same sign.

The exact condition, and who can form it

Same-sign conjunction is the standard requirement. Given Mercury’s maximum elongation of 28°, the two are in the same sign in roughly half of all charts and in adjacent signs otherwise. Frequency alone should set expectations here.

What the tradition says

Intelligence, administrative skill and articulate expression — one of the most frequently named yogas in modern readings.

What makes it strong — or merely technical

Everything turns on combustion, which is the central tension in this yoga: the very proximity that forms it is what burns Mercury. Mercury combust is conventionally within about 14° of the Sun, and a Budha-Aditya formed at 3° separation is simultaneously the tightest conjunction and the most compromised Mercury. The useful instances sit in the narrow band where Mercury shares the sign but stands outside combustion range.

What cancels or dilutes it

Mercury retrograde is held by many to withstand combustion better, and a retrograde Mercury near the Sun is read more favourably than a direct one. Beyond that, the house involved matters: the conjunction in the 5th or 10th supports the classical reading, in the 6th or 8th considerably less.

When it is held to operate

Sun and Mercury dashas and their mutual antardashas. Mercury’s seventeen-year mahadasha gives the longer window.

Where the classical sources disagree

The combustion question is genuinely unsettled. One school holds that no combust planet delivers its yoga; another holds that Mercury, as the Sun’s natural companion, is exempt. This is not a minor gloss — it determines whether the yoga means anything in the majority of charts that carry it.

An honest reading

Mercury never travels more than 28° from the Sun, so the two share a sign in a very large share of charts. This is close to a structural feature of the solar system rather than a distinguishing chart feature.

A note on how to hold any of this: a yoga is one feature of a chart among many, and no combination decides a life on its own. Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
