Shasha Yoga

Sanskrit: “hare

How it forms

Saturn in its own sign (Capricorn or Aquarius) or exalted (Libra), placed in a kendra from the Lagna.

The exact condition, and who can form it

Saturn must hold Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra in a kendra. Eligible ascendants are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn (through Capricorn or Libra), and Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius (through Aquarius). Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces cannot form Shasha Yoga, which is the same excluded set as Ruchaka.

What the tradition says

Associated with authority built slowly, administrative capacity, endurance, and power over people or systems — the yoga of officials, managers and those who outlast rivals.

What makes it strong — or merely technical

Exalted Saturn in Libra in the 10th is the strongest instance and the one most often cited in the biographies of long-tenured administrators. Saturn’s exaltation degree is 20° Libra. Saturn in the 7th produces a demanding but stable partnership reading; Saturn in the 4th is the placement classical authors treat most cautiously, since Saturn in the house of the mother and home is uncomfortable even when dignified.

What cancels or dilutes it

Saturn is combust within about 15° of the Sun, and Sun–Saturn contact carries its own difficulty as a natural enemy pairing. Saturn closely conjunct Mars is read as turning endurance into harshness. Unlike the benefic Mahapurusha yogas, Shasha is rarely described as cancelled outright — the tradition more often describes it as producing authority at a personal cost.

When it is held to operate

Saturn mahadasha runs nineteen years and is the classical period of slow consolidation. Shasha is also read against the Sade Sati cycle, and the interaction of a strong natal Saturn with a Sade Sati transit is one of the more genuinely contested judgments in practice.

Where the classical sources disagree

The Libra exaltation route is universally accepted, but authorities differ on whether Aquarius, as Saturn’s airy sign, produces a milder yoga than Capricorn. Some texts additionally require Saturn to be aspected by a benefic before granting the full reading, treating an unaspected strong Saturn as producing isolation rather than command.

An honest reading

The classical descriptions of Shasha are noticeably more ambivalent than those of the other four, often mentioning severity alongside authority. Saturn strong is not Saturn benign.

A note on how to hold any of this: a yoga is one feature of a chart among many, and no combination decides a life on its own. Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
