Sanskrit: “swan”
Jupiter in its own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) or exalted (Cancer), placed in a kendra from the Lagna.
Jupiter must occupy Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer with that sign falling in a kendra. That admits eight ascendants: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces (through Sagittarius or Pisces), and Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn (through exalted Jupiter in Cancer). Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius ascendants cannot form Hamsa Yoga.
Held to give wisdom, moral standing, teaching ability and a life that others look to for guidance. The swan is the classical symbol of discrimination — separating what matters from what does not.
Exalted Jupiter in Cancer in the 1st or 10th is the strongest reading. Jupiter in Pisces is often preferred to Sagittarius by later authorities because Pisces is the sign of the guru’s own moksha significations. Jupiter’s exaltation degree is 5° Cancer, so a Jupiter early in Cancer is materially stronger than one at 25°.
Kendradhipati dosha is the live issue here: for Gemini and Virgo ascendants Jupiter owns two kendras, and one classical rule holds that a natural benefic owning kendras loses benefic power. Practitioners split sharply on whether this weakens Hamsa for those two lagnas. Combustion and close conjunction with Rahu are the other standard dilutions.
Jupiter mahadasha runs sixteen years. The tradition also reads Hamsa as activating during Jupiter’s transit returns — roughly every twelve years — which is one of the few Mahapurusha yogas commonly linked to transit as well as dasha.
The Cancer exaltation route is accepted by most compendia but rejected by a minority who require own sign only. Texts also differ on whether Jupiter retrograde in a kendra strengthens the yoga, on the grounds that a retrograde planet is closer to Earth and therefore more potent, or weakens it as a planet moving against its natural order.
Jupiter strong in a kendra is a genuinely favourable placement in most readings. It does not by itself indicate wealth or ease; it indicates counsel, growth and a certain steadiness of judgment.
Our free kundli checks for Hamsa Yoga deterministically from your birth chart and will tell you plainly whether it is present — and will never claim it when it isn't.
Create your free kundliA note on how to hold any of this: a yoga is one feature of a chart among many, and no combination decides a life on its own. Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
