Bhadra Yoga

Sanskrit: “auspicious, noble

How it forms

Mercury in its own sign (Gemini or Virgo) or exalted (Virgo), placed in a kendra from the Lagna.

The exact condition, and who can form it

Mercury needs Gemini or Virgo in a kendra, which narrows the eligible ascendants to exactly four: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. No other Lagna can form Bhadra Yoga under the standard definition. This is the tightest lagna restriction of the five Mahapurusha yogas and the reason Bhadra is far rarer by ascendant than its reputation as "common" suggests.

What the tradition says

Associated with intelligence, articulate speech, commercial skill and learning — the yoga of scholars, writers, traders and analysts.

What makes it strong — or merely technical

Mercury in Virgo is the strongest instance because own sign and exaltation coincide there — the only such overlap among the seven classical planets. Mercury in the 1st or 10th is read more forcefully than in the 4th or 7th. Since Mercury is naturally a neutral, absorptive planet, the company it keeps matters more here than for the other four: Mercury with Jupiter reads differently from Mercury with Saturn.

What cancels or dilutes it

Combustion is the central caveat. Mercury never travels more than 28° from the Sun and is therefore combust in a large fraction of charts — traditionally within about 14°. A Mercury that satisfies the sign and house condition but sits four degrees from the Sun is widely held to deliver little of the yoga. Affliction by Mars or Rahu is read as turning the analytical faculty toward argument or deception.

When it is held to operate

Mercury mahadasha runs seventeen years, the second longest after Venus, so those who get a Mercury period at a formative age tend to experience Bhadra most visibly. Mercury antardashas within Jupiter or Venus dashas are traditionally treated as the secondary activation windows.

Where the classical sources disagree

Texts disagree on whether Mercury in Virgo counts once or twice — some treat the coincidence of own sign and exaltation as compounding the yoga, others as a single qualification. There is also a minority position that Bhadra requires Mercury to be unaspected by malefics, which most modern practitioners do not apply.

An honest reading

Because Mercury is exalted in a sign it also owns, Bhadra is the most commonly occurring of the five. Its presence alone says little; Mercury’s house rulership and the strength of the 2nd and 5th houses say more.

A note on how to hold any of this: a yoga is one feature of a chart among many, and no combination decides a life on its own. Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
