A lord of a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a lord of a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) in conjunction, in mutual aspect, or in exchange of signs.
Because the 1st house is both a kendra and a trikona, the Lagna lord participating in almost any such link technically qualifies. The most valued instance is the 9th and 10th lords in relationship — the dharma-karmadhipati yoga — because it joins the strongest trikona to the strongest kendra. For Taurus and Libra ascendants this pairing is unusually easy to form, which is why practitioners weigh those charts more carefully rather than more favourably.
The classical marker of rise in status — position, recognition, authority beyond the circumstances one started in.
Judge by three things: whether the participating lords are in their own or exalted signs, whether they sit in a kendra or trikona rather than in the 6th, 8th or 12th, and whether they are free of combustion. A Raja Yoga formed by two debilitated lords in the 12th house is technically present and practically inert. Conjunction is generally read as stronger than mutual aspect, and full exchange stronger still.
The standard dilutions are the participating lords being combust, debilitated without cancellation, or placed in dushthanas. Kendradhipati dosha applies where a natural benefic owns a kendra. A Raja Yoga whose lords are hemmed between malefics — papakartari — is read as promising a rise that repeatedly stalls.
Read as operating during the mahadasha and antardasha of the participating lords, and most strongly when one lord’s mahadasha runs with the other’s antardasha. This is the single most useful thing to know about Raja Yoga: it is a timed event, not a standing condition, and a chart carrying several may express them decades apart.
Sources disagree on whether mutual aspect alone suffices or whether conjunction is required. They also disagree on whether the 8th lord, which for Aries and Libra ascendants is also a kendra or trikona lord, can participate. Some later authorities count only conjunctions in kendras and trikonas, which drastically reduces the count.
Raja Yoga is a category, not a single combination, and some form of it appears in a large majority of charts. Its presence is unremarkable; the strength and house placement of the two lords is what actually differentiates one chart from another.
