Sanskrit: “cancellation of debilitation”
A debilitated planet whose debilitation is cancelled — most commonly when the lord of the sign it occupies, or the lord of its exaltation sign, sits in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.
The commonly cited conditions are: the dispositor of the debilitated planet in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon; the lord of the sign where that planet would be exalted in a kendra; the debilitated planet aspected by its own dispositor; the debilitated planet exchanging signs with its dispositor; or the debilitated planet itself in a kendra from the Moon. Different texts list between three and eight such rules.
That a weakness in the chart is not merely neutralised but converted into a source of strength, often producing a rise from unpromising beginnings.
Most convincing when several conditions are met at once rather than one marginally. A debilitated planet that is also retrograde and receives its dispositor’s aspect from a kendra is a substantively different case from one that qualifies on a single technicality. Whether the planet is combust is a useful tiebreaker.
The cancellation can itself be undermined: a dispositor that is combust, debilitated, or in a dushthana is generally held not to accomplish the neecha bhanga. This layer is routinely skipped in casual readings.
Read during the dasha of the debilitated planet. The classical descriptions specifically note early difficulty followed by later rise within the same period, which is one of the few places the tradition builds an arc into a single dasha rather than a uniform effect.
This is the yoga with the widest disagreement in all of standard Jyotish. Parashara, Mantreswara and later authors give materially different rule sets, and there is no consensus on whether the result is genuine elevation or merely the removal of harm. Any source that states the rules as settled is overstating them.
This is among the most over-claimed combinations in modern practice, partly because there are so many competing cancellation rules that almost any debilitated planet can be argued into qualifying.
