Two planets occupying each other’s signs — the lord of house A in house B while the lord of house B sits in house A.
The tradition sorts exchanges into three classes rather than treating them alike. Maha Parivartana involves lords of kendras and trikonas and is read favourably. Khala Parivartana involves the 3rd lord and is read as mixed. Dainya Parivartana involves the 6th, 8th or 12th lords and is read as burdensome. Classifying the exchange correctly matters far more than noticing it exists.

Strength follows the houses involved, not the planets. A 9th–10th exchange is the strongest form regardless of which planets happen to own those houses for a given Lagna. Exchanges between adjacent houses are read as more easily integrated than exchanges across the chart.
An exchange is not cancelled in the usual sense, since the structural fact remains. What changes the reading is affliction of either planet, and involvement of a dushthana lord, which converts a Maha into a Dainya in practice even where the technical label says otherwise.
Both planets carry the exchange, so either dasha activates it, and the antardasha of one inside the mahadasha of the other is the sharpest window. This gives Parivartana more activation opportunities than most yogas.
The three-class scheme comes from Mantreswara’s Phaladeepika and is not used by every tradition. Some practitioners weigh only the houses and ignore the classification entirely; others hold that any exchange involving the 6th, 8th or 12th is disqualifying regardless of what else is present.
