Sanskrit: “war drum”
The 4th and 9th lords in kendras from one another, with the Lagna lord strong; or the 4th lord exalted or in own sign while the 10th lord is likewise placed.
Under the primary form the 4th and 9th lords must be four, seven or ten signs apart from each other, and the Lagna lord must independently be strong — in its own sign, exalted, or in a kendra. All three conditions are required; the yoga is not formed by the first two alone.
Enterprise, boldness and command of resources — often read as property, vehicles and the material apparatus of a settled position.
Strongest where the 4th and 9th lords are also mutually aspecting and the Lagna lord occupies a kendra. Because the 4th and 9th are both trikonas of a kind — the 4th being a kendra and the 9th the strongest trikona — this yoga overlaps substantially with the Raja Yoga category, and practitioners often read them together.
A weak Lagna lord removes the yoga outright under the standard formulation, which is the condition most often ignored. Affliction of the 4th lord is read as turning the promised stability into restlessness.
Activated in the dashas of the 4th, 9th and Lagna lords. Property and vehicle acquisitions are the classical markers practitioners look for during those periods.
The two formulations differ on whether the 9th or the 10th lord is the partner to the 4th, and the resulting readings are not the same — one emphasises fortune, the other action. Some texts add a requirement that the participating lords be free of combustion.
The classical descriptions of Kahala are mixed, frequently pairing the promised boldness with stubbornness. The drum is an instrument of war, not celebration.

Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
