Chamara Yoga

Sanskrit: “royal fly-whisk

How it forms

The Lagna lord exalted and placed in a kendra while aspected by Jupiter; or, in the alternative formulation, two benefics together in the 1st, 7th, 9th or 10th house.

The exact condition, and who can form it

Under the strict form: the Lagna lord must be in its exaltation sign, that sign must fall in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th, and Jupiter must aspect it — by the 5th, 7th or 9th aspect. Only a few ascendants make this geometrically possible at all, since the Lagna lord’s exaltation sign must itself land in a kendra.

What the tradition says

Honour conferred by others — patronage, appointment, titles. The chamara is the whisk waved over a seated king, so the image is of status recognised rather than seized.

What makes it strong — or merely technical

The strict form is strong by construction. Under the loose form, strength depends on which benefics and which house: Jupiter with Venus in the 9th is the reading most cited, and two benefics in the 7th is the weakest of the four permitted houses.

What cancels or dilutes it

Jupiter combust or debilitated undermines the aspect requirement in the strict form. In the loose form, a malefic joining the two benefics is generally held to break the yoga rather than dilute it.

When it is held to operate

Lagna lord and Jupiter dashas under the strict form; the dashas of the participating benefics under the loose one. Because the yoga concerns conferred rather than earned status, classical sources link it to periods when the 9th and 10th houses are also activated.

Where the classical sources disagree

The two definitions are not variants of one rule but essentially different yogas that acquired the same name. Anyone claiming Chamara Yoga should say which they mean, and most sources that do not are relying on the loose form.

An honest reading

A genuinely rare yoga under the first definition, since it requires exaltation, kendra placement and a specific aspect at once. The second definition is far looser and accounts for most claimed instances.

A note on how to hold any of this: a yoga is one feature of a chart among many, and no combination decides a life on its own. Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
