Sunapha Yoga

Sanskrit: “good disposition

How it forms

One or more planets other than the Sun — and excluding Rahu and Ketu — occupying the 2nd house from the Moon.

The exact condition, and who can form it

Count the 2nd sign from the Moon and check for occupants. The Sun is excluded because its proximity to the Moon is a function of lunar phase rather than of any independent placement. Rahu and Ketu are excluded under most formulations. A single qualifying planet is sufficient.

What the tradition says

Self-earned resources, intelligence and standing built through one’s own capacity rather than inherited.

What makes it strong — or merely technical

The identity of the occupant does most of the work. Jupiter in the 2nd from the Moon produces a very different Sunapha from Saturn there. Multiple occupants strengthen the yoga, and a dignified occupant strengthens it further.

What cancels or dilutes it

A combust or debilitated occupant is generally held to leave the yoga technically formed but practically empty. Since the 2nd from the Moon is a resource-signifying position, an afflicted occupant is read as resources that arrive and disperse.

When it is held to operate

The dasha of the occupying planet. This is one of the clearest cases where a yoga has no meaning apart from a specific planet’s period — there is no standing Sunapha effect to speak of, only the periods of whatever sits in that sign. Where two or more planets occupy the position, each contributes its own window, and the antardasha of one inside the mahadasha of another is where the classical descriptions are read most literally.

Where the classical sources disagree

Sources differ on whether Rahu and Ketu can form the yoga, and on whether a single planet suffices or two are needed. The exclusion of the Sun is near-universal but the reasoning given for it varies.

An honest reading

One of a set of three related Moon yogas that describe whether the Moon has planetary company on either side. Frequency depends entirely on how crowded the chart is around the Moon.

A note on how to hold any of this: a yoga is one feature of a chart among many, and no combination decides a life on its own. Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
