Sanskrit: “preceding, in front”
One or more planets other than the Sun — and excluding Rahu and Ketu — occupying the 12th house from the Moon.
Count the 12th sign from the Moon — the sign immediately preceding it — and check for occupants, applying the same exclusions as Sunapha. A chart may carry Anapha, Sunapha, both, or neither, and the last case is its own named condition.
Health, an even temperament, ease of manner and a reputation that comes without being sought. Classical descriptions emphasise physical wellbeing more than in the paired Sunapha.
Benefic occupants produce the classical reading most directly; Venus in the 12th from the Moon is the instance most often cited for the ease-of-manner description. Malefic occupants shift the yoga toward withdrawal rather than health.
An afflicted or combust occupant hollows it out, as with Sunapha. Because the 12th house carries expenditure and dissolution significations generally, an occupant that also rules the 6th or 8th is read as undermining the health reading specifically.
The occupying planet’s dasha and antardasha. Since Anapha is read as concerning constitution and manner rather than events, classical sources describe it as showing in the texture of a period rather than in discrete outcomes — a distinction worth holding when comparing it against yogas that promise specific results.
Same disputes as Sunapha regarding the nodes and the minimum number of planets. There is an additional disagreement over whether the 12th-from-Moon position should be read with the general 12th house significations of loss, which some authorities apply and others hold irrelevant here.
The mirror of Sunapha, and equally dependent on which planet actually occupies the position. The 12th from the Moon is a position of release, which colours the reading toward detachment.
Our engine doesn't currently detect Anapha Yoga automatically, so we won't claim it either way. Generate your free kundli to see your planetary positions, house placements and dignities, then check the condition above against them yourself.
Create your free kundliA note on how to hold any of this: a yoga is one feature of a chart among many, and no combination decides a life on its own. Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
