Sanskrit: “from the beginning, chief”
Natural benefics — Jupiter, Venus and Mercury — occupying the 6th, 7th and 8th houses counted from the Moon.
Benefics must occupy the 6th, 7th or 8th from the Moon. Most formulations accept the yoga with benefics in any of the three, with the strength increasing as more of the three are occupied. All three occupied by all three benefics is the complete form and is genuinely uncommon.
Leadership, health and a comfortable material life; classical sources associate it with positions of command and with longevity.
Graded by count: one benefic gives the weakest form, three the strongest. Dignity of the benefics modifies this. The 7th from the Moon is generally weighted most heavily of the three positions.
Malefics joining the benefics in those houses is the standard dilution. Combustion again affects Mercury and Venus disproportionately.
Benefic dashas. Because the yoga is read as concerning both authority and longevity, classical sources treat its effects as accumulating across successive benefic periods rather than confined to one — which distinguishes it from the flanking yogas, where a single planet’s dasha is the whole story. Jupiter, Venus and Mercury periods together account for a little over half the Vimshottari cycle.
Some authorities count the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Lagna instead of from the Moon, which produces an entirely different set of qualifying charts. This is a substantive fork, not a technicality, and sources rarely flag which convention they are using.
A well-regarded and reasonably strict yoga. The requirement that benefics fall in houses usually considered difficult is the interesting part, and it is deliberate.
Our engine doesn't currently detect Adhi Yoga automatically, so we won't claim it either way. Generate your free kundli to see your planetary positions, house placements and dignities, then check the condition above against them yourself.
Create your free kundliA note on how to hold any of this: a yoga is one feature of a chart among many, and no combination decides a life on its own. Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
