Sanskrit: “without support”
No planet other than the Sun in either the 2nd or the 12th house from the Moon — the Moon standing entirely without planetary company on either side.
It is defined by absence: check the signs immediately before and after the Moon and find both empty of planets other than the Sun. The nodes are excluded under most formulations, which means a Moon flanked only by Rahu is still technically Kemadruma. Its frequency depends on how clustered the chart is; in charts where several planets bunch together, it becomes correspondingly more likely.
Isolation, instability of circumstance, and effort that does not consolidate. One of the most anxiety-inducing yogas in popular writing.
The classical texts do not grade Kemadruma by strength so much as by whether the cancellations apply. That inverts the usual analysis: the first question is not how strong it is but whether it survives at all.
The standard cancellations are broad. Any planet in a kendra from the Lagna cancels it under one common rule; any planet in a kendra from the Moon under another; the Moon in a kendra from the Lagna under a third; the Moon conjunct or aspected by a benefic under a fourth; a strong, well-placed Moon under a fifth. In practice a large majority of technical Kemadrumas are cancelled by at least one of these.
Moon dasha and antardasha, where uncancelled. Because the Moon’s mahadasha is only ten years and often falls early in life, classical sources frequently connect an operative Kemadruma to unstable early circumstances rather than to a lifelong condition.
The cancellation rules vary more than the formation rule, and different texts list different sets. This matters enormously in practice: the same chart can be read as carrying a serious Kemadruma or none at all depending on which authority is applied. Any reading that names Kemadruma without walking through the cancellations is incomplete, and if it ends with a remedy for sale, treat that as the point of the exercise.
The classical cancellations for Kemadruma are numerous and easily met, which is why the alarming reading almost never survives a full chart check. It is the single clearest example of a yoga weaponised for fear-marketing.
Our free kundli checks for Kemadruma Yoga deterministically from your birth chart and will tell you plainly whether it is present — and will never claim it when it isn't.
Create your free kundliA note on how to hold any of this: a yoga is one feature of a chart among many, and no combination decides a life on its own. Classical texts frequently disagree on exact conditions, and a yoga’s effects are traditionally read as arriving during the dasha periods of the planets involved rather than continuously. Be particularly wary of any reading that names a difficult yoga and then offers to sell you the cure.
